Holy Grail Review: Kinky Curly Curling Custard

Before I start this post, I’d like to say that this product is pretty much the sole reason I decided to transition. Previously, when I wore my hair in a wash and go style, I had to apply a TON of product to eliminate frizz, which basically resulted in my hair well, not moving. Then, the wash and go style only came around when I really didn’t want to blowdry my hair or didn’t have enough time to do it. But then, one day I was talking to this girl who has natural hair and I was asking her what she puts in it, and she told me she uses Miss Jessie’s. Now, being the little researcher I am, I immediately began researching Miss Jessie’s online. Seems like a great product, but it wasn’t available in any stores around me…fail. I’m impatient, and needed something like, that afternoon. So I keep researching and ran across Naturally Curly.com, where they had a thread that said “KCCC vs. Curly Pudding.” Basically, people were talking a lot about how Miss Jessie’s changed their formula to include mineral oil and how it shouldn’t cost as much as it does, blah blah, KCCC is better. Okay, thanks thread! So I go to the Kinky Curly website…cute and simple. When I clicked on “Where to Buy” it said Whole Foods!!! SCORE. I live right by WF! I called my WF to make sure they had it…whoa, it was sold out. So now I’m thinking, “Shit this stuff must be good if it’s selling out.” and now I want it even more! Thankfully, it was at the WF by my job. But I mean, hot damn, $25 (now $30) for some hair gel? This stuff had better be good….

Fast forward to the next morning. I CO wash and am trying to figure out how to apply this stuff. It smells like vanilla and is gooey, kind of like the Ghostbusters slime that used to come with the Slimer toy. I’m fine with this. Now, my hair is super thick, so it took a bit of time for me to be okay with the amount I had in and making sure I didn’t miss any parts. I hope I don’t use too much… I fingerstyled and scrunched like always (geez my hair is wet) and went off to work, praying that a) my hair would dry sometime soon so I could stop looking like a wet poodle and b) that my curls would stay defined so I didn’t end up looking like I stuck my finger in an electrical socket. When I was reading reviews on the product, I saw that some said it dries sorta crunchy and you gotta scrunch out the curls. Yes, my hair was certainly crunchy, so when I got to work I went into the bathroom and scrunched some more. Voila! I had defined soft curls, with a good amount of shrinkage, which is good for me because most of my hair is relaxed and I wanted it to curl “up.” Even my best friend, who usually doesn’t really like my wash and go style, said this gel was awesome and worth the $30 because my hair looked so much better! Yea, thanks, friend for dissing my hair in the first place. I kid, I kid.

In conclusion, let’s break down the pros and cons:

Pros: Great curl definition, easy to obtain, pleasant smell, all natural ingredients, frizz reducer

Cons: Expensive, crunchiness, may run out fast (I dunno but I feel like I use a lot?)

Verdict: Definitely a holy grail item. Wild Child gives it two curls up! (Get it, rotfl)

UPDATE: Since this post, the Queen Holy Grail position has been taken away from my dear KCCC, and given to AfroVeda PUR Whipped Gelly. Head to http://wp.me/pA5f1-3v and check it out. If you need more help with curl definition, KCCC might be better for you though.

Yep, it’s in Target now too! This review was pretty old so it was before it got to Target. I have the Smoothie too, I really like how they reformulated it.

It’s absolutely wonderful! Why do you think it’s always sold out? They sell out ALL the time at my Whole Foods! Hah!
