New Holy Grail List! Yes…again. (Staples)

  • Updated: May 23, 2011

Some of you may wonder why my HG list keeps changing – well, it’s because my hair changes! As my hair gets longer, it likes different things or I figure out something else that works for me. Also, I buy a LOT of products, and there is no WAY I could continue to rebuy them ALL, so, a new product may “kick off” an old one. But, I will say, that since AfroVedagate, I am much more reluctant to buy products from small companies due to consistency and quality issues. Also, I really am coming to dislike companies that I can only buy from THEIR site. Really? I need some variety, and to be able to not spend $10 shipping on one product. Most of the products on my current list are able to be purchased from multiple sites, or I can buy on the ground.

A few notes:

  • These are all products I consider to be holy grails, and do not include products that I will simply rebuy due to a sale, if I’m bored, etc…I buy lots of things on a whim or if I’m in a bad mood (lol).
  • Where’s the Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel? If you are an avid reader/viewer of my blog, you may remember that I did a STELLAR review for KMF, like, it was one of the best reviews I’ve done. I loved it so much that I went out and bought two more bottles! However, since that time, I have noticed that KMF does not play so well with some of my leave-ins, which is NOT COOL. I HATE getting white head! I will rebuy it most likely because I know what LIs work with it and I can purchase it at Whole Foods, but that is a deal breaker on my holy grail list.

For additional information and a condensed list of my favorite staples, check out this video.

If you have any questions, think I forgot something, or would like to know if something is a rebuy, please let me know! Thanks, lovies! xoxo

Hi Elle! I just purchased Curl Junkie Curl Rehab and Curl Junkie Curl Queen. I LOVE the Curl Rehab as a DC and have been trying it out as a leave in paired with the Curl Queen but have been having an issue of foaming during application and white residue when my hair dries. Have you ever had that problem with these products? I think I could really like these products if I can just get around this issue. Let me know what you think! Thank you! 🙂

    • HB says:

Hey there, I actually do not like to use the Rehab and Curl Queen together – for me it’s too much moisture and I can get poofy hair. I usually use Rehab as a leave-in with a styler that can make my hair crunchy, like Eco Styler or Kinky Curly Curling Custard, and that alleviates the issue because the Rehab is so nourishing.

      • Johnna aka jfrierson09 says:

Oooooooh. lol I gotcha. I did notice some poofy-ness as well, but I was more thrown off by the white residue/foaming issue. In that case, I think I’ll just stick to using the Rehab as a DC and try experimenting with a few other leave-ins under the Curl Queen gel bc it definitely has potential so I don’t want to give up on it yet! Thanks for replying!

Hi Elle! Can you tell us what your top 1 or 2 are in each category? As far as best, all around use. I’ve been experimenting for a year and want to condense my stapes for budget and time savings, lol. I know it depends on what works for th individual but would like your suggestions. Thanks 🙂

Hey Elle! I was just wondering do you consider the Donna Marie shampoo to be just a repurchase and not a holy grail? Are you going to do a review on it soon? Thanks!

    • HB says:

Actually, you know what…I just looked at my list again and I don’t think I have any holy grail shampoos right now. I really love my Creme of Nature shampoo and this would be my holy grail (because it’s the only shampoo I really love that I can buy on the ground), but they no longer make it, and I don’t know if I can get more when I finish this bottle. I’m waiting on the new CON sulfate-free poo to come out in April, since it’s supposed to be based on the discontinued formula. I can revisit the Donna Marie and do a review as well, I have a lot left.

what was the most moisturizing product out of the beja flor naturals? And which is more moisturizing and the mositure last out of qhemet’s biologics burdock root butter creme and beja flor naturals creme brulee?

    • HB says:

From Beija Flor, I really like the Creme Brulee and the Hemp Buttercreme – the Buttercreme I have used at night on my ends, as well as my skin. Honestly, I can’t compare the CB to the BRBC because I haven’t used the CB in months, and I still have the BRBC, so I don’t think it would really be fair.

  5. Tawana says:

Have you ever tried Hairveda’s Amla Shampoo? Its definitely the best shampoo out there period…not trying to encourage your product junkie behavior but I’m sayin lol

    • HB says:

LOL! No, I haven’t tried that one. The JBCO shampoo doesn’t mess/frizz my hair up, and I really don’t like shampoo, so that’s really all I want it to do.

  6. aiden says:

Are you still feelin’ Beija-Flor Naturals Creme Brulee? I watched your old review for it and decided to give it a shot. How do you feel about it now that you’re out of the twa phase?

    • HB says:

I haven’t used that in forever…not because I don’t like it, but b/c I have a lot of Beija-Flor products, like the Licorice Root Elixir, Hemp Buttercreme, and the Antioxidant Face Balm (I forget the name). A little goes a long way with all these products, so it’s like I can’t finish them, lol! I am trying to wait until I need to repurchase something else to reorder it – I saw she has it in a bigger size now too. I can’t even say how it would be on my hair now b/c as it’s grown, it’s completely different.

  7. Halibel says:

Nice List you got there, Elle. I might try some of these products you listed.

I so need to find me some AVG and try since most of the naturals swear by it lol. I am tired of Eco styler Olive oil…..blah -_- lol

    • HB says:

I personally am not fond of Eco Styler at ALL. My hair is med/coarse, so all the protein in Eco is a NO GO. It makes my hair hard and brittle. You can usually get AVG from any drugstore, or some grocery stores. Just make sure it does not contain alcohol. The organic gel is also at Whole Foods, but this is a thinner consistency and harder to apply.

    • HB says:

Oooh, good idea – let me add my DCs!

And, lol, it’s really not that much! I do my hair everyday, so it’s easy for me to go through products. 🙂

    • HB says:

JBCO is raw and unrefined, unlike regular castor oil, so it contains more nutrients. However, I think that both of them are fine to use on hair, I just like JBCO better.

  8. zainab1 says:

I looove KMF gel. I just brought a bottle due to you another naturals great review. I will be using this more then my curly magic by uncle funkys daugther. Plus its a whole lot cheaper and the ingredients are just as good. This worked great with my kinky curly not today mix, and QB amla & oilve cream. It gave me beautiful full soft curls. I am now on third day hair. I will be rebuying this little number ASAP 🙂

thanks for sharing your list. Take care.

    • HB says:

I agree, it’s a great gel – when I used it with my Shea Moisture Milk I had one of the best hair days! But…I’ve definitely gotten white hair with it. 😦 And you tried it with the Heavy Cream? I just used the HC and it is NOT absorbing into my hair…but, I also have low porosity hair.
