This cream was one of my last-minute Black Friday purchases…I wasn’t going to order anything from DB, I had already ordered ENOUGH, but I saw on NC that Lysandra was giving a free bottle of her new cream gel, so I thought, what they hey? I ended up getting both of the new products for less than $20 w/ shipping, which is basically unheard of for natural products. Well, I’ve tried the product twice, and probably won’t be using it again unless I can think of a different way to use it (Actually, it might make a good DC for me when I get my steamer? I dunno…). Let’s get straight to the rundown…
Smell: Like an island type scent…sort of coconutty…actually, it smells sorta like Jessicurl’s Island Fantasy scent but not as strong.
Consistency: Well…I’m a little iffy about this. The DB site has this picture up of the cream:
This made me think that the product would be thinner in consistency and more goopy (it looks “goopy,” no?). However, my jar looks like this:
I’m not sure if you all can tell, but it’s MUCH more buttery than I thought it would be, which already had me weary because my hair often hates butters on wet hair. They just don’t have enough slip for me. The mixture is VERY thick – I even tossed it around and it did not fall out the jar like my Oyin did (LOL). It will shift if you lay it on its side though.
Ingredients: Distilled (Aqua) Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Cetearyl Glucoside, Virola Sebifera (Ucuuba Butter), Theobroma Grandiflorum (Cupuacu) Seed Butter, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Cetyl Esters, Linum Usitatissimum (Linseed) Seed Oil, Oryza sativa (Rice Bran) Oil, * Organic Glycine Soja (Soybean) Oil, *Organic Elaeis Guineensis (Palm) Oil, Euphorbia Cerifera (Candelilla) Wax, Silk Protein, Hydrolyzed Starch Phosphate, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Honey, Hydroxyethyl Cellulose, Pyrus malus (Apple) Fruit Extract,Vaccinium myrtillus (Bilberry) Extract, Citrusmedica limonium (Lemon) Peel Extract, Citrus aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Extract, Carica papaya (Papaya) Leaf Extract,Gluconolactone, Sodium Benzoate, Panthenol, Phenoxyethanol, Caprylyl glycol, and Fragrance.
The site says it’s a moisturizing leave-in for curls, twists, and waves….well…unfortunately, not for me. The first time I used this, I used it as my LI after cowashing with my beloved Oyin Honey Hemp (I know, I really need to take it out of my shower!). My already soft hair almost began turning hard while I applied it, kind of like how it acts with the Super Butter Creme, which doesn’t have much slip for me when applying but dries SO soft. Therefore, I decided to work through it…I applied in sections all over my head, and I realized that when I got to the front of my hair where there was a little HH left in, it was much easier to apply due to the slip that was already there. It hadn’t really done much for me when I finished applying, and hadn’t absorbed all the way into my hair. Looking at myself sideways in my bathroom mirror, I remembered that it was recommended on the site to use the Cream Gel with this LI…so…I took a couple of globs of that and smoothed it on the top. I was surprised at how much slip was in the Cream Gel! It still hadn’t absorbed well, and I just wasn’t feeling how my hair felt with the LI…it wasn’t softening up, and felt kind of waxy. I think I may have even added some oil on top too? I dunno, it was doing too much for me. I stared at the Cream Gel in anticipation…and hopped back in the shower.
Scene Two: After I ended up having a lovely hair day with the Cream Gel (I’ll talk about that later), I cowashed with my Donna Marie Miracurl Detangler, and decided to give the LI one last chance. This time, in anticipation of the hardness, I first applied Curl Rehab and detangled. First off…I was VERY annoyed with my detangling session, because I had not detangled in like, over a week, had been sleeping on cotton pillowcases and what not, and wasn’t cowashing my hair daily in DC to at least finger detangle. Izzy was like, “Heaux, you see all these shed hairs up in me? Smh at you!” But I got through it, and applied the LI. Now, if you’ve heard me talk about detangling before, you’ll know that my hair poofs out a lot when I comb/brush through it, but my hair will easily clump back together if my product has enough water in it, or if I get back in the shower and cowash (but I wasn’t going to do that since I had already left in my Rehab). Well…I’ll say…this “sort of worked.” My hair in the back went back to normal, although it was bigger (which is fine with me), but my looser hair at the top was still pretty frizzy and looked almost straight. I applied some Aloe Fix Lite and CIAB on top…once again…having to use too many products and do too much damage control. I was going to leave it be, I mean, it looked okay…but it still had that waxy feeling and I feared that when drying it would tangle my hair. So…back into the shower I went.
Unfortunately, I don’t have any pics because I usually only take pics of dry or near dry hair, since my hair might look fine wet, but get frizzy/hard/icky when it dries. But…this product didn’t even make it that far. And I basically wasted some HG Curl Junkie products with it, so you know I really didn’t like my hair. 😦
This product might be better for twists or a setting style, but I really didn’t like how it went on my hair…le sigh. Ah well, you can’t win them all. I’ll update on the Cream Gel later…it smells like Fruity Pebbles!
xoxo
Hi Elle – It’s me secretsandlies09 from YouTube. You forced me over to the blog. 🙂
As for the Darcy’s, I love this stuff, but I assumed it was for twisting, not for leaving in or detangling. It’s just way too thick for that. I think she needs to rename it.
I used it with my Giovanni Direct and then let my hair dry to about 80% and twisted my hair. It did feel waxy at first, but that feeling went away completely once it dried. I left the twist in for about 24 hrs and then I had/have a great twist out with very little frizz. I might not have any frizz if I could have kept my hands out of my hair.
I also like the Curl styling cream gel. I had been using Kiss My Face Uppermanagement gel over a twisting cream for the center of my hair because my frizz in that area was just ridiculous. Now I don’t have frizz using the cream gel. I love it.
Thanks for the review, Chica!
Hey, thanks for coming over, lol! 😉 I agree with you about the Styling Cream…I’m going to use it for a braid out the next time I do one….umm…whenever that will be. I can’t even say if the waxy feeling would go away or not b/c I hated how it felt in my hair so much that I washed it out both times! I like the gel but I remembered that Lysandra wanted feedback on it, so I’m not sure if I should review it on the blog or YT b/c she might change the formula? Hmmm…
I know you mentioned it was new, but I don’t see the Cream Gel on the DB site. It was DB – yes?
She was offering it for free with on the site for Black Friday…I think she’s waiting for feedback before she puts it back up.
I tried alot of things from DB and hate most of it except the hair milk(which I actually like). When it comes to their products the consistency seems to change with every order.
Ok, I just heard through the grapevine (ie Alex’s blog) that u use MTG and that u talked about it on twitter (boo for those of us not on twitter) So can u please review it here since uve had good results? I’m interested in it but I would like to know exactly which product to get, where and ur thoughts. thx!
I got you boo, I was about to blog anyway. So I’ll just do this instead!
Do most natural hair companies have product consistency inconsistencies? (pun intended)
Anyway, i feel like i’m in a rut. KCKT+KCCC is the only thing that’s giving me good hair days. I really want to be able to have something different that works! I’m going to try and order curl junkie (one of your HG) – i just wish i could get it from my local store like KC. 😦 maybe when my hair gets longer it will like different things.
thanks for the review.
It really depends on the company – I don’t mind if the consistency is a little different, because that can vary depending on how long a product is blended (which can vary by seconds), but if the performance is different, that’s when I have an issue. If you like KCCC, you can also try the Kiss My Face Upper Management Gel – I think they are kind of similar. I also heard that the Donna Marie Gelly has a similar consistency, but I haven’t gotten that yet because of the glycerin/winter thing.
First of all, LOL @ “heaux.” 🙂
Secondly OHHHHH the whole inch of snow here (in DC) that’s got traffic aaalll jacked up.
Also, thanks for the review. Now I think I want to try the Super Butter Creme…
Yea girl, I’m glad I got out before the snow!!! FTW!
did you have fun in DC?
No, it was cold! And my skin is still recovering from it being so dry…I need a facial!!!
it’s snowing now
I have this product too and I am not happy either. It is sooo thick and waxy not like I thought. Only will use it on the ends of braid or twist out, when it gets longer.
