Update: I decided to just return this to Target. Even though some people were saying that I should try it alone, the texture is just too greasy for me – alone. This is not an aspect that is dependent on my hair properties, how I apply it, or what I mix it with. Since this isn’t something I can fix/change, I returned it.
Here’s another pic…
Hi Elle, I really wish that I would have looked at your vlog on this product. I just purchased it and used it on my hair. Talk about gree-zay! My hair feel like I poured on Jheri curl juice. I am going to give it another try, but I am not very optimistic.
So far I like the shampoo and the milk from the Shea Moisture line. But i think I will do more research before I go out and spend money on another product for my hair.
My hair is very kinky and tight and my hair loves the Souffle. I think it is mostly for tight, thick 4b/c hair. Should be used when wet after a wash and then twist hair. To refresh, just take a little bit and smooth on hair to retwist. This is the only product so far other than Ms. Jessie’s curly pudding which leaves my hair dry, that works. You get moist, defined curls with the Souffle. The smoothie gives shine but not much definition.
No, not “you.” Because I did not. Also, if I have to twist my hair to use a styler, it is not worth it for me. You are not getting defined curls from the Souffle, you are getting them with the twists.
@zyran – thanks for sharing that. You would think Shea Moisture would have made that suggestion.
Fellow youtuber “Thecreativelady” mixed the Shea Moisture Curling SoufflĂ© w/Curl Enhancing Smoothie and you might want to try it this way ladies. Hope this helps it looks interesting. Here’s the video link for it.
I tried it for the 1st time, and will return it to Target tomorrow. I will stick to what works for me, which is Kinky-Curly.
Tried the curl souffle’, oh my gosh, this thing SUCKS. my body is sticky, my hair is sticky, so will not be using it again.
I don’t understand why people think it’s ok to return products to stores AFTER they have used it?????
Why is that wrong if that is the return policy of the store? Please explain.
I didn’t know that that was the return policy of the store. Since I didn’t know, I thought that that was a tacky practice. The store allowing you to return used/opened products is a different matter which I don’t take issue with.
Oh okay, yes I agree if that was not their policy that would be tacky. Whole Foods lets you do it too, and I always make sure I tell them I have used a product, even if it was just a little bit and the bottle isn’t clear, because I don’t want them to try to resell it – that’d be gross.
Yes, please explain…I don’t see what is wrong, if the store allows you to return opened/used products within a specified time frame, I don’t get it…also…nm
Exactly, Allison. It would be different if you lied and said that you didn’t use it in order to return it, but there are several stores that will let you return things (at least for store credit). Why would you want to be stuck with a product you dislike or are not going to use?
Haha I love you Elle, and you totally confirmed it with this one.Uh absolutely priceless, especially from 6:07-6:14..Ha!
Hey Elle do you ever do giveaways for the products that Izzie really doesn’t like? P.S.- Your face looks SO sad in that pic lol
Nah, I either return them or wait for a local swap. And yes, I was very sad!
Ok so I totally busted out laughing when you said your hair looked like a tree on top of your head or a bad hat!! 🙂 The only Shea Moisture products that my hair likes are the Organic Black Soap Deep Cleansing Shampoo and the Organic Raw Shea Butter Restorative Conditioner. I only use the shampoo if I have product buildup or accidental greasy hair. I only use the conditioner after swimming as it is really thick/heavy.
I think SheaMoisture rushed to get this product out because people were begging them for a gel. I still plan on trying it because you know what they say about one man’s trash, but next time you get store credit, try your hand at chili with ground turkey. it’s my new favorite recipe and i would have never thought to try it, so it’s all i’ve been talking about for the last few weeks lol
LOL I love chili with ground turkey…it’s basically the only thing I eat in winter!!
I hope you are having a great week and you have not given up blogging! I look forward to your reviews and all the information I gleam from you.
Hey hey I’m here! Just been busy – I did a video last night but then my camera died! I was mad. I have to re-record it today.
Thanks for the quick review. I really didn’t have a lot of hope for this product since the Smoothie was a big fail for me. I wish I understood the thinking that went into this formula. I also stay bemused at certain reactions to reviews. It boggles my mind since nothing keeps me from trying any product I want. I may even try this one down the line when I have some discretionary capital. But reviews help me to prioritze my pjism and that goes a long way in helping my pocket book.
I SO waited on this product on pins and needles! Made it to target with only one left (sigh of relief and pure joy) …….but then I tried it…. I feel exactly the same way as you! My hair is really thick and doesn’t dry quickly anyway, but this was just RIDICULOUS!! And the greasiness OMGoodness!!!!!!!!!!!! Just a sticky mess. I couldn’t even touch it. Ugh! And I love Shea Moisture.
Help!! I want to go natural and don’t know what to do. So my son decided to try it first. He’s 15 and has an afro…sort of…He started growing out his hair a couple of years ago, but only to straighten it with a pressing comb. So I think the neds are damaged. But he has a natural big curl to the first 1 inch of it. The hair is about 4-5inch total. He want the curly look now and so do I. What is our first steps in acheving your look?
Please look around the site – my entire regimen is posted here and I have several tutorials on how I do my hair.
I see in an earlier post, you mentioned you use the blue Ecostyler gel. I had a bad experience (hair breakage) with the pink version due to the high concentration of wheat protein. I am wondering what has been your experience with flaxseed gel. Since flaxseeds have a lot of protein in them, I am afraid to try it.
Please add questions not pertaining to this post at http://www.youtube.com/user/denimpixie?feature=mhee. Thank you!! xoxo
Hey Elle, when I went to Walgreen’s (at 2am after reading your article and finding out that the line was on sale) I didn’t even see the stuff. Since they only had 1 Purification Mask, I tried a new product (on my head) the Shea Moisture… Milk, which is supposed to be the updated product from your Holy Grail list (the original formula) and actually enjoyed it. So far I used it by itself and the with the IC Gel. Do you think that they rearranged the formula again?
By the way, I love your reviews. Good, Bad and Ugly.
They changed the Smoothie, not the Milk, as far as I know. The Milk is a totally different product than the Leave-In I have, but I like them both. The Souffle is only at Target right now. And thanks!
Dang, that was deep.
Why does it always turn into someone wanting to tell you that a)you used the product wrong or b)you have X type of hair when you give your honest feedback about a product?
It’s pretty helpful to hear either way. I tried one Shea Moisture product (some kind of leave-in and it made my hair super hard to comb once dry; normally I don’t have that issue). I tried another product that they market as a conditioner that wound up working great as a leave-in on my dry hair (and read elsewhere that someone recommended one of their leave-ins as a rinse out).
I will say that it’s great to find things that are just down the road in a store instead of things that I have to order online and risk getting swindled. I’m pretty glad that most of my faves are in Target, Walgreen’s, CVS.
I think there is this odd phenomenon where people take things about other people’s hair much too personally(so if you cut it some day people will be falling out). I think some of it starts b/c they see your hair and want it, so if you try/use something that they like and don’t like it, it threatens their belief that they’ll get where you are. It’s also why they want you to document step by step what you use on your hair, even though it’s what is inside us that causes that to happen (and what we do to it ourselves that dictates what results we get).
I had to laugh at this review…why because I tried it (SM Curl Souffle), I think Saturday night…and had the same first impression as you. It looked like a gellie but was a lot firmer and oh gosh the oil…all on the neck…so I totally understand and agree. My hair is much shorter then yours and my curls and kinks are tighter and I still don’t like it (saw someone say maybe because you have loose curls)…I wasn’t pleased…I washed it on and DC’d over night…I’m still debating on whether to return it or not (I might try and revisit in late fall or winter)…so if you DO decide to keep it let us know what end up using it for.
But I really feel your pain, SM is a great line and I guess my expectations were higher…anywho thanks for the honest review…and letting me know that I wasn’t the only one feeling some kinda away about the product!
Omg thank you SO MUCH for your comment. Some people were real salty I didn’t like this and all of a sudden I no longer have kinky hair…and then all of a sudden my med/coarse hair became silky and the oil weighed my hair down b/c of that. What?
I didn’t keep it…I went back to Target the same day and got a store credit, then bought ingredients to make ground turkey burritos, lol.
I am finding it weird that some people are so upset you don’t like it. It is not like you are standing at the doorway of target preventing them from going to buy it.
Well, thanks for the review. I have no intention of using gels until my hair grows longer as the clumping seems to be the same regardless, but now I know not to touch this product with a ten-foot pole. From the heavy use of glycerin to the greasiness. My hair does not absorb heavy oils/butters.
Thanks again.
I find it weird too, especially since I didn’t say that the company sucks and they are horrible I would never touch another one of their products again. People seem to like average reviews, where you like it, but don’t love it. Meh.
Thought it was just me. I WANTED to like it sooo bad, but…
Now that I think of it, I still haven’t tried KCCC….
Off to Target I go!
I found that the Shea Moisture products were too greasy for me too. I have been using KC Knot Today and KCCC with much success. But the trick to that is not to use too much or it will be crunch city. I also can use ECO stylers, but again don’t put too much in your hair because of the crunch.
thanks, Elle. Always useful and timely information. I just ran out of my curl enhancing smoothie and if I had seen this prod. at my target I would have picked it up. Like you said they have many great products, but this one seems like a dud. Also, I didn’t expect a soufflĂ© to look like a gel. I would expect it to look more fluffy and creamy.
Best to you and Izzy.
Yes that looks bad. If that’s how it looks after an hour – not good. I may try it just to see if it is different on my 4 hair.
WITH diffusing!!! Lol. I was just taken aback. I have some stylers that are very light and do not give my huge clumps like say, Eco, but they don’t make my hair limp either – it’s more of a fluffy look. I just feel like it was bad for me.
sooooo did you wash it out? I had a similar experience with a curls product I bought at target recently (not greasy but just wrong) and I was kinda torn afterward (since I wasn’t leaving the house that day anyway – tropical storm IRENE, holla) about whether I should wash the product out or whether I should have just let it sit and wash my hair the next day so as not to over-manipulate/over-wash my hair. I washed it, but I felt a little sad for my strands.
My hair was still soaking wet, so it’s not like it dried then I rewet it. Sometimes I get concerned about doing my hair more than once a day if it would be constantly changing state (wet-dry-wet-dry), but it was so wet I was like whatever. I didn’t wash it with shampoo, I just rinsed it and did a quick condition, then restyled.
Do you use it with the Kinky Curly leave in? Which eco styler do you use? My hair looks similar to yours. My hair lays like yours in the front but the nape shrinks like crazy!!
No I don’t use Knot Today and I use the Blue Eco. I have several posts talking about how I use Kinky Curly and reviews/posts on Blue Eco that should be helpful.
It smells good but like you said it has a tacky/oily feel to it. I really wanted to like it! I wonder how it would feel mixed with some eco-styler. I like eco -styler but its kinda crunchy. BTW, how do you like Kinky Curly gel?
I don’t use max hold Eco so it’s not crunchy for me. KCCC is my favorite gel.
I think you didn’t like it because you already have a loose curl pattern, and as soon as the video started I was like damn her hair got longer, then u zoomed in on your hair and I saw your curl pattern got looser, so I think that this Souffle would be perfect for my hair type 4a ,and 4b’s and c’s because it will help stretch our beautiful tight curls, but stretch it to just show some more length, why not?
No ma’am, that’s not correct (no offense). My curl pattern was looser b/c my hair was soaking wet and limp. I have no idea what would have happened once my hair dried b/c I had to wash it out, it just wouldn’t dry and was uber greasy. I do 98% of my videos with dry hair, so it’s shrunken to its natural pattern.
okay I see you did it wet, well I watch your video all the time and I was wondering have you ever heard of yes to Carrots if so, can you review it, alot of natural talk about it, and it’s inexpensive and comes with 16.9 ounces for 8 dollars
I used it a looong time ago and hated it. Too oily for me as well. I used to love Yes to Cucumbers and then they changed the formula and it was more like the Carrots one.
