Elle’s Sparkly Summer Grow Out Challenge!

Hey y’all!

BabsSo, yesterday I was on my Facebook thinking about what my hair goals were for summer – this season is usually full of good hair days for me (or at least cute buns), but I usually get hair bored and need to figure out something new to try with my routine. The perfect focus for me? Growth! Over the past year or so, I have become increasingly lackadaisical with monitoring or even paying attention to my growth, which doesn’t make sense because I definitely still have hair goals that I have not reached. Namely, I want to get my hair to tailbone length and maximize my hair thickness (my hair is already thick, but it’s not as big as I’d like it to be). And just like that, my grow out challenge was born!

So how can you participate in the challenge and what the heck am I doing? Basically, I want to closely monitor my growth and thickness from June 1 to September 1.

Elle’s Stats:

  • Goals: To maximize growth and thickness during the summer months
  • Starting Hair Length: I will measure Izzy on June 1 for a baseline
  • Routine Highlights:
    • Moisturize ends (I’ll try to do at least every other day)
    • Take a hair vitamin daily (currently taking a generic brand but I am going to get a new one)
    • Detangle hair with a comb consistently (combing my hair before it gets too tangled to decrease hair loss)

  1. I have been neglecting my hair and I’m bummed because it’s breaking. Was wondering how to recharge my enthusiasm about my coils and here I am. I’m on board. Wash and go’s, deep condition, vitamins and getting it moving are my plans.

  2. Hey, I am loving this challenge. I just recently trimmed my hair so my plan was to protective style all summer. My hair + hot and humid = sponge!.My regimen won’t change much but I am including the kimmey-tube leave in for the summer months. I have been challenge with detangling so I was thinking to detangle more often, we’ll see. My hair measurements are front 9 inches. right side 9 inches, back 7 inches. I’m taking my natures made vitamins as well. Happy Growing!

  3. I’m all in; just the jump start I need to break out of this rut I’ve been in, and by rut I mean sheer dread at having to detangle weekly (mo hair, mo problems). Your challenge also comes along at the perfect opportunity since I’m undertaking “Operation Get Back Right” over the summer, basically eliminating, or putting on the back burner, distractions/time sucks which inhibit me from checking items off my long list of personal to-do’s, cleaning up my eating a bit more and undertaking different forms of exercise. Since I’ve yet to find a hair, skin and nail vitamin sans soy and/or shellfish (my body has the temerity to have severe reactions to both), my swap is a cup of nettle leaf tea twice a day, because it too is great for hair, skin and nails. 🙂 Wash n go’s will be my BFF’s this summer – set it and forget it; wash, rinse, repeat. Great challenge Elle!

  4. This was my goal for 2014. I trimmed on January 1st, but I’m joining your challenge. I started the L.O.C. method for april and may. I find that I have moisture overload and I’m looking for the right balance to continue in the growth of my hair. Good challenge Elle and will be uploading my picture also.

  5. Hi Ladies! I’d like to participate in the challenge as well. I last had my hair trimmed in March and straightened in April so I will also be incorporating no heat into this grow out challenge as well. My weekly wash regimen consists of the following:

    1. Pre-poo with a conditioner and olive and coconut oils. Sit under my steamer for 30 mins.

    2. Rinse out pre-poo. Co – wash hair with Core Radiance moisturizing conditioner.

    3. Apply Core Radiance deep conditioning mask and seal in with a few drops of Simplicity Oil. Sit under steamer for 30 mins.

    4. Rinse out deep conditioner. Apply Core Radiance leave in conditioner, ManeButter, and seal with Simplicity Oil.

    5. Style

    *At night I seal my ends with ManeButter and Simplicity Oil and put on my silk bonnet.

    *As for vitamins, I’ve been taking a combination of Nature’s Bounty Hair, Skin and Nails gummies and the Mane Choice vitamins. I’ve also started juicing on a daily basis with a combination of fruits and veggies.

    All in all, I know my process is a little overboard but I have really seen a major improvement in the health and growth of my hair.

    1. My process is a bit involved as well, but it has yielded results from the increased amount of moisture and consistency; once I stray I see/feel a noticeable difference. I’m hopeful this challenge gets me back into my “boringly consistent” routine, rather than the sense of dread I have now when it’s time to wash (basically, going so long between washes then crying because my hair is so tangle). Can’t wait to how everyone does come September.

  6. I’m in! I’m at bsl at the longest, but I want waist length hair. It’s thick as heck, but I would like to encourage as much growth as possible.

  7. I would also like to join. I had been growing out a texturizer that was over processed, and had been wearing my hair straight due to the two different textures. As of today I couldn’t stand it anymore and trimmed off the last 1″ of straight ends and got my curls back! So now my hair is just touching my shoulders when I pull out a curl. I’m currently taking Hairfinity , exercising routinely, increasing my water, and deep conditioning every week. Happy growing everyone!

  8. You must have read my mind because in thinking about my goals for the rest of the year hair growth and length retention were definitely in there. My hair is not as thick as I would like and hasn’t grown as much as I would have liked since I cut off my locs in April of 2013. I also need to focus on moisture because dryness is a huge issue for me. Right now I’m aiming for shoulder length :-).

  9. I’m in! I have been having trouble with the nape area with tangles from not moisturizing nightly. Perfect time to measure and start the challenge

    Quick question, can this Challenge be tweaked to fit ones hair needs? Specifically usig a comb to detangle? Where your hair is thick, my teeny coils are extremely fine. And with a comb I cringe at the snap, crackle n pop noises my hair makes

  11. I just cut ALL of my hair off (more than I wanted actually, but that’s what I get for going to a new stylist), so this is perfect timing! I had a baby about 5 1/2 months ago, so I’m still dealing with some post partum hair loss that affects my thickness, but length I can (hopefully) do!

  12. I would love to participate in this challenge. I have been neglecting my ends lately and would love to see how long my hair can grow.

I’ve begun to implement the above mentioned method for length retention about a month ago, as i too, became lackadasical and lazy this past year (I’ve been heat-free natural for a little over three years). I will definitely be participation in this challenge. My goal is waist length (stretched), full APL or BSL (unstretched). I may cut my hair in the future, but I want to see my hair’s full potential first!

  14. DEF IN! I’m starting at APL length. my goal is mid back…anything more than that and i will go insane :P, I to have to learn to detangle with a comb before my hair gets too matted.
    My current routine has been good except the detangling thing. So i plan to stick to it except i’ll try more buns….good excuse to by hair accessories.
