Oh yes loves, a skincare post! Over the past month or so, I’ve talked about my current obsession with skincare, especially natural skincare and learning about the benefits of plant actives. Blame it on my new book boo, Plant-Powered Beauty. I’ve been learning a lot – mainly how just like the makeup industry, the skincare industry plays us for our coins everyday and sells us products that aren’t actually beneficial for our skin (looking at you, silicones) or overcharges like crazy for natural ingredients because of the brand (like I always say though – if you want it, get it).
I started buying multiple products from brands that I can get locally, like Mad Hippie, Acure, Whamisa by Glow Recipe, Dessert Essence, and more. But then I thought, “I have so many black-owned brands that sell skincare, why not check them out?” Over the past few days I’ve been searching and jonesing for all kinds of products, but I…can’t buy them yet. Why? Because it’s not the best idea to add ten new products to your skincare routine at once. I’m assessing this current regimen I have going for the next few weeks, but I wanted to share these products with you and why I want them. Check them out below.
I’m going to be honest – these names really pulled me in because they make me think of vampires (Twilight, yea okay, but still vampires). But the ingredients!
DAY BREAK Daily Serum
Ingredients: *Argania Spinsosa (Argan) Oil, *Opuntia Ficus Indica (Prickly Pear) Oil, Squalane, Santalum Spicatum (Sandalwood) Oil, *Juniperus Communis L. (Juniper Berry) Oil, Non-GMO Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil
*Certified Organic
TWILIGHT Night Serum
Ingredients: *Plukenetia Volubilis L. (Sacha Inchi) Oil, *Camellia Oleifera (Camellia Seed) Oil, Rosa Canina (Rosehip) Oil, Hippophae Rhamnoides (Sea Buckthorn) Oil, CoQ10, Boswellia Carterii (Frankincense) Oil, Lavandula Officinalis (Lavender) Oil, Non-GMO Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Salvia Sclarea L. (Clary Sage) Oil
They’re just so yummy and packed full of plant goodness. Prickly pear supports cell renewal and is anti-aging, and sacha inchi oil protects against damage while repairing it at the same time. At $90, this set is more on the expensive side, but still less than a lot of oil blends from Sephora, and I don’t see those ingredients that much. I’d love to see what would happen using these oils as my main AM and PM oils. They just look so good, and I love the packaging.
2. Nolaskinsentials Fountain of Youth Serum
There are a few other products I want on the Nolaskinsentials site (the toner, night cream, and serums), but I decided to include this one because of the beta carotene, which is a form of vitamin A. Some experts say that using naturally occurring vitamin A causes less irritation, and because my skin is sensitive, I thought it might work better for me. It also has aloe, which is my forever love when it comes to skincare. At $17 for 1oz, this is definitely a product worth trying out.
3. Shea Shea Bakery Anti-Acne Vitamin Mist
Witch Hazel is still my holy grail toner at the moment, but I definitely am looking to switch to a black-owned brand. I also have The Ordinary Niacinamide, but honestly, I don’t think my skin likes it too much and this seems more gentle but also has zinc. Shea Shea Bakery also makes the best smelling shea butters like, EVER, so obviously I’ll be picking up additional scents when I get this spray. It’s $16 for 8oz, so that will last awhile.
4. The Delicate Fox Socialite Shimmering Body Butter
Warmer weather will be here soon, and if you know me, you know that my exposed skin needs to glow all day, everyday. I LOVE shimmer and glitter products, and this one is amazing because it doesn’t contain anything that would clog pores, and like most butters, a little will go a long way. My body is ready.
This serum contains hyaluronic acid and claims to hydrate your skin like crazy while repairing your barrier function. Right now, the acid I have is from Trader Joe’s and while I can’t beat that price, this serum has additional ingredients, such as squalane, algae, sea fennel, and vitamin e. I’m glad to see their store open back up, and some products are going to be in Sephora!
Of course it’s sold out right now (thanks, Fenty), but I’d like a BoB to replace my current shimmer oil from frank body. Definitely waiting for the restock…They also have a shimmer scrub called California Love, but I made my own the other day using oil, honey, sugar, and highlighter (it works great!).
I’ll definitely keep you all updated on purchases and reviews! xoxo
